The first Lake Superior Circle Tour was given in 1960. Right after this part of the highway was completed, a bus took a group of individuals along the 1,300-mile path along the shores of the Lake.
This Great Lakes Tour goes through three different states as well as through parts of Canada. Along this route are a number of destinations that are well worth visiting for their scenic beauty and their place in history.
When looking at a Lake Superior map, the majority of the shore is touching Ontario. In Thunder Bay, harbour life is at its fullest with the recently renovated waterfront looking more spectacular than ever. You will also find Kakabeka Falls in this area. It is the second-largest waterfall in Ontario, and there is a walkway at the top of the falls that offers an incredible scenic view.
As you continue through Ontario, the next must-see stop is in the town of White River. This is the home of a little boy named Christopher Robin and the zoo where his friend Winnie the Pooh lived.
The Lake Superior Provincial Park is full of beautiful painted rocks, gorgeous trails and scenery that defies description with its beauty. Batachawana Bay is a great place to enjoy the beach.
Minnesota
Minnesota is the scenic portion of the trip. It is full of trails like the Arrowhead trail, the Caribou trail and the Sawbill trail, but it also has sites like Gooseberry Falls that are well worth stopping for, especially if you are making this Great Lakes Tour during the fall. If you travel to Minnesota then Split Rock Lighthouse is a historical stop that has been on the Lake Superior map for over a century.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin is the smallest portion of the journey, but there are still a lot of scenic opportunities along this portion of the lake. Bayfield is a quaint little town that is full of waterfront bands and scenic outlooks.
You won’t want to miss nightlife at the harbour if you’re looking for a bit of social interaction during your beautiful road trip. Friendly pubs and clubs let you enjoy your favourite drinks or try something new and mingle with locals.
There are some great locations in Michigan along the coast of Lake Superior, but the most scenic locations to visit are closest to the eastern side of the lake. The picturesque Rock National Lakeshore, the Seney Wildlife Refuge and the Point Iroquois Lighthouse are amazing places to stop and check out while you’re enjoying your trip to Michigan.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park is a relaxing place that’s perfect for hiking, and it’s home to two waterfalls. One even resembles a miniature Niagara Falls. If you have time to stay at Whitefish Point for a day or two, the sandy beaches and the lighthouse museum will give you plenty to do during your stay.
