Flying out of Vancouver
Vancouver's only airport is Vancouver International Airport (YVR), located about 12km from Vancouver's downtown core. The airport is served by approximately 60 airlines and consists of two terminals, the Main Terminal and the South Terminal. The majority of flights operate out of the Main Terminal, which is subdivided into a Domestic Terminal and an International Terminal.
While you cannot fly direct from Vancouver to Milan, you can make the trip with just one stop. Where this stop is will determine your departure terminal at YVR. If your stop is within Canada, you will fly out of the Main Terminal's Domestic Terminal and if your stop is outside of Canada, you will be flying from the International Terminal. You will need a valid passport to fly from Vancouver to Milan.
Milan Airport Options
Milan, Italy is served by three international airports: Milan Linate Airport (LIN), Milan-Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Orio al Serio International Airport (BGY). Though international passengers can fly into all three airports, flights to LIN and to MXP are more frequent.
Milan Linate is located approximately 7km from the city centre. Common flight routes from YVR to LIN include a stop in London via British Airways or in Frankfurt (via Lufthansa. The airport consists of one passenger terminal, with arrivals and baggage claim located on the ground floor.
Milan-Malpensa is quite far from central Milan, at approximately 49 km northwest. However, this airport serves close to double the amount of passengers annually than Milan Linate. Common flight routes from YVR to LIN include a stop in Toronto (via Air Canada, in New York via Cathay Pacific, in Munich or Frankfurt via Lufthansa, and in Paris via Air France.
MXP consists of two passenger terminals, connected by a free, 24-hour shuttle bus. EasyJet uses Terminal 2 and all other airlines share Terminal 1. There are multiple car rental companies available in the arrivals hall of each terminal. Limos, taxis and car sharing are also all available but can only be found at Terminal 1.
What to Expect in Milan
Milan is nine hours ahead of Vancouver, so be sure to pick up some tips on beating jet lag before you catch your flight. Restaurant prices are comparable between the two cities.
Spring and fall are great seasons to visit Milan as the temperatures are generally mild and pleasant. However, there is a higher-than-average chance of rainfall in April and May, so remember to pack a raincoat if your visit falls within those months. The summers in Milan are generally quite hot, with an average of 13 hours of daylight per day (similar to Vancouver). The biggest weather difference between the two cities is that Milan experiences a high degree of fog throughout the year.
