This is well-traveled route between two of the major cities in the United States. Chicago and New York are important centers for commerce, tourism, and each have more than one busy airport to handle the volume of traffic. That includes shopping, dining, entertainment, and banking options, along with other perks like upscale lounges. It’s easy to find a cheap, convenient flight with the carrier of your choice for this trip.

Airports in Chicago

There are currently two international airports serving the city of Chicago. Both airports are well connected to public and private transit options and have all the amenities you might need for your flight.

• Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) Most flights to New York from Chicago still depart from this notoriously busy airport. The entire airport consists of four terminals with plenty of transit between them.
• Chicago Midway International (MDW) is growing, especially regarding its selection of domestic carriers and national flights. Midway Boulevard, a quaint collection of shops and cafes, is part of the single-terminal design and is a great place to wait out a stopover.

Airports in New York

There are several commercial airports in the New York area. There are three that dominate the city skies, and each has its own unique history. All of them are closely connected to regional and local transit options.

• John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is the one airport to rule them all on the American east coast. This is a very busy international port of entry, more closely connected to cities like Seoul and Paris than domestic destinations.
• Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is a major international airport known for long haul flights, even a few that have broken records. In 2003, this airport hosted the longest non-stop flight on earth, which traveled from New York to Hong Kong.
• LaGuardia Airport (LGA) handles most of the regional and domestic flights in the area, including your flight from Chicago. This airport will likely be your destination if you are flying in from another US city.

Departure and Arrival Information

Traveling between these two American cities won’t cause you any culture shock, but there are some handy facts than can make your trip a little easier. The following information is useful for regular commuters, random tourists, and everything in between.

• Time Change. Don’t forget to set your clock for an hour ahead when you land in New York. Jet lag isn’t an issue on this run between the Central and Eastern time zones, but it’s still enough to miss that crucial meeting.
• Documentation Required. It used to be that you only needed picture ID to travel on domestic flights in the United States. Today, you need almost the same thing as anyone flying on an international flight. That includes a passport, an official passport card, and at least one other piece of picture ID like a driver’s license. These requirements change frequently, so make sure you have the required paperwork before you travel. Children are the exception, and often have different requirements than adults for domestic air travel.
• Ground Transportation. Both airports are well-connected to private and public transportation options. Private cars and limousines are just as readily available in both cities regardless of the airports you’re visiting. Metro lines, express shuttles, and local transit services are connected to directly to the airports in both Chicago and New York.
