Dover vacation highlights
Hit the trails
From spring to fall, Dover is best experienced outdoors, especially on its numerous trails. An accessible starting point for hikers of all levels is the Dover Community Trail, a pretty stretch of country that winds through town on a former railroad bed. You’ll find many well-marked trailheads, making it easy to customize your route. Or stay close to the comforts of town on the downtown Cocheco Riverwalk.
Mill around
Dover is the oldest continuous European settlement in New Hampshire. While on vacation in Dover, glimpse this history at the old mills in the center of town. Recently converted into retail and commercial precincts, these historic buildings offer a nod to the city’s industrious past. And although it’s not the original, Garrison Hill Tower is worth visiting, if only for the 360-degree views.
Where to stay
What Dover’s hotels lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. Victorian-style hotels and inns are located both in the downtown area and further north near Willand Pond. Dover’s inland location also makes it a great option if you’re after a more affordable, yet still refined, New Hampshire beach getaway.
Things to do in Dover
Places to eat
The rich agricultural lands of New Hampshire and abundant North Atlantic waters come together to inspire many local menus. Seek out restaurants and grills serving lobster rolls, local lamb, beef, cheese and vegetables. A steady increase in migration to the area has also seen a new crop of notable Thai, Japanese and Chinese restaurants.
Shopping
The leisurely pursuits of life in the country are reflected in Dover’s retail offerings. You’ll find well-stocked outdoor sports stores and quaint knitting shops. Antiques, New Hampshire homewares and kids clothing are also in healthy supply. Seek out the historic Cocheco Mill for a collection of these stores within easy walking distance.
Beaches
Jenness State Beach is a long sandy stretch that’s perfect for a swim, and if the conditions are right, a surf. It’s a 35-minute drive from Dover and has metered parking. If you’re traveling with a pooch, Foss Beach is dog friendly. For a protected sandy cove good for kids, cross state lines to Maine’s York Harbor Beach.
